Washington, DC, graduation scandal | IN 60 SECONDS

For a decade Washington, DC, has been a
celebrated national model of school reform. Then, in January, and audit showed that one third of DC’s high school graduates should not have received
diplomas. Indeed, it turns out that the system’s true graduation rate is lower
than it was in 2011. How could this have gone unnoticed? Blogger Alexander
Rousseau has placed part of the blame on rank boosterism by the capital’s
preeminent news outlet. But this coverage reflects a larger problem: the bandwagon
mentality in school reform. Since 2007, philanthropists have poured more than a
hundred and twenty million dollars into DC schools, and advocates and think tanks were lauded for glowing accounts of developments in DC. It was easy for
reformers to feel they’d be labeled unhelpful or anti reform for going
off-script. This all fueled a “with us or against us” mindset in which no one
looked too hard for problems. DC should be a wake-up call for a
school reform culture that has been heavy on cheerleading and light on
skepticism. What do you make of the Washington, DC, graduation rate scandal? Let us know in your comments. Also, let us know what other topics you’d like our scholars to cover in 60 seconds, and be sure to like and subscribe for more

  1. I would love to see the AEI do a long form (90 min.) discussion of DC, Chicago, Oakland, Los Angeles and other failed school districts that are awash in money but utterly failing.  I believe the reasons are largely political but significantly social with kids who don't care … Because their parents never cared and so on.  I think a pragmatic and probably less expensive solution might be to pay at least certain kids to go to school, more for higher grades, a big bonus for graduating with a genuine education.  Maybe.  Money for schools is not the problem.   Actually there's too much spending.

  2. Is AEI trying to tell us something? So many women in universities. But only a few appearing in the background when bad news breaks. A bit mainstream media-ish.

  3. Absolute denial, deceit, and delusional by the Washington DC government. These media and elected officials, must perpetuate the hoax that black people are relentless victims of relentless white racism, all the time, everywhere, and that explains everything, especially why so many predominately black Washington DC throw in Baltimore too) schools fail; The media and elected officials are simply afraid to be called racist.

  4. Thank you for calling yourself out on the mistakes. Too rarely are institutions willing to highlight past errors.

  5. Shut those schools down and stop forcing people to pay for something that wants to be broken. If you can't do that then just send the political hacks and sick ideologues working there a paycheck on the condition they stay away from children.

  6. Homeschooling, no matter how badly done, is more effective than public schooling. Just spend a few years teaching kids to read & to do arithmetic. Use hundreds of online resources to assist you. Then at 13, give them a laptop loaded with education websites like Khan Academy for science & Eddie WooTube for mathematics.

  7. Stop blaming the “white man” and lack of funds for poor performing schools. It’s a false narrative that hurts the kids and only helps Democrat politicians get elected. We need to start holding the the students and their parents responsible for their failure to get an education. You can’t learn a damn thing if you don’t show up to school. You can’t learn a damn thing if you act a fool when you’re in school. You can’t learn a damn thing if you don’t try to get an education. That means you’re going to have to work hard. You’re not a computer. Your teacher can’t upload the information to your brain. They can provide you with the information, but you have to take advantage of your opportunities. Ultimately, it’s your life and only YOU can make the most of it.

  8. BALLOU PASSED ALL STUDENTS THEY ALL GOT DIPLOMATS. THEN THEY WERE ACCEPTED INTO COLLEGE. READING AT A 2ND GRADE LEVEL.NOW THEY BUILT A BRAND NEW FRANK BALLOU IN WASHINGTON D.C.MORE CHEATING .BLACKS THINK THEY DESERVE TO BE JUST PASSED BECAUSE THEY ARE BLACKS.WHAT ENTITLEMENT THEY HAVE . TEACHERS ARE MOT AS TRAINED AT BALLOU HIGH SCHOOL LIKE OTHER SCHOOLS.KEEP WATCHING ITS ALL ABOUT MAKING MONEY.WATCH THEM AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS .
